Dr. Jessica Hsing An Chen

Dr. Jessica Hsing An Chen, a native of Taiwan, has started her professional singing career as Prince Orlofsky with the concert-style of Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra in 1995.

In the seven years in which she performed as a mezzo-soprano, Dr. Chen sang many roles with National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan), Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, and Taipei Symphony Orchestra such as Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Carmen, Waltraute (Die Walkure) and Brangaene (Tristan und Isolde). Since then, Dr. Chen has developed her career as a spinto /dramatic soprano. Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana with Taipei Symphony Orchestra was her first role in this new repertoire in 2002.

The fiendishly difficult role of Princess Turandot with the Malaysia Symphony Orchestra was a highlight of her singing career with the production of the Malaysia Pinang Arts Council in Pinang and Kuala Lumpur in 2003.

In 2004, Dr. Chen was engaged to sing Princess Turandot again for a performance celebrating the birthday of Thai Princess Galyani Vadhana. In 2005, she worked with Bangkok Opera Company again, singing the title role in Verdi’s Aida and she was engaged for a gala concert for the 50th-anniversary concert of Malaysia YTL Enterprise Group. Later, Pinang Arts Council engaged her to sing the role of Carmen.

In 2006, she performed Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) under the baton of András Ligeti with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and the charity concert for the King of Malaysia, Syed Sirajuddin.

Bangkok Opera Company in 2007 engaged her to sing Bruennhilde in Die Walkuere. Before she began her work at UCLA, she sang Turandot with Singapore Lyric Opera Company at Esplanade Theater in 2008. Dr. Chen gave her the first DMA recital at UCLA in 2010.

In 2011, she scored a success in the role of the Old Prioress in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites for Opera UCLA and she also participated in the twentieth anniversary of Singapore Lyric opera at Esplanade. Later within the same year, Dr. Chen sang Tai Ran Shao's 1947 Overture with Torrance Symphony Orchestra in California. Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, the 100th anniversary National Celebration Day concert under the baton of Shao Chia Lü in Taiwan, was her last major performance in 2011.

In 2013, Dr. Chen sang the Beethoven Symphony No.9 at Esplanade Concert Hall. Later, she was reviewed for her successful performance at the Verdi’s Gala Concert of Singapore Lyric Opera and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella.

In 2014, Dr. Chen was engaged to perform Mozart Requiem under the baton of Lim Yau. In 2015, she was invited to perform a concert for celebrating the 50th National anniversary in Singapore and Bach’s Magnificat with NAFA Orchestra under the baton of Ashely Solomon.

In 2016, Dr. Chen sang two opera concerts in Los Angeles successfully, afterward, she was invited to sing a Season Concert 2017-18 with the international well-known Baritone Vladimir Chernov by Arcadia Performing Arts Center, Los Angeles in 2017.

In 2018, Dr. Chen was invited to sing a fund-raising concert of Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the well-known Maestro Jahja Ling for the Spiritual Grace Presbyterian Church in Singapore. Later, she sang the opera Strauss’s Die Fledermaus for the NAFA 80th Anniversary celebration production. Before the end of 2018, Dr. Chen hit the big success of two separate concerts, one sang the opening concert of the 11th Annual International Chamber Music Festival of the Central Conservatory in Music, Beijing and another sang the Yellow River Cantata with the well-known conductor Tsung Yeh at Esplanade Concert Hall.

In 2019, she was one of the soloists with the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy under Maestro Andrew Litton with Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

ในปี 2016 ดร. เฉินแสดงในคอนเสิร์ตโอเปร่าสองงานในกรุงลอสแองเจลิส สหรัฐอเมริกา ก่อนจะได้รับเชิญไปร้องในงาน Season Concert 2017-18 ร่วมกับศิลปินบาริโทนผู้มีชื่อเสียง Vladimir Chernov ซึ่งจัดโดย Arcadia Performing Arts Center ณ กรุงลอสแองเจลิส ในปี 2017

ในปี 2018 ดร. เฉินได้ออกแสดงในคอนเสิร์ตการกุศล ด้วยผลงาน Elijah ของ Mendelssohn ร่วมกับ Maestro Jahja Ling ผู้มีชื่อเสียง ซึ่งจัดโดย Spiritual Grace Presbyterian Church ของสิงคโปร์ และขับร้องเพลงจากอุปรากรเรื่อง Die Fledermaus ของ Strauss ในคอนเสิร์ตฉลองครบรอบ 80 ปีของ NAFA

ก่อนจบปี 2018 ดร. เฉิน ยังได้แสดงในอีกสองคอนเสิร์ตสำคัญ ได้แก่ คอนเสิร์ตเปิด 11th Annual International Chamber Music Festival จัดโดย Central Conservatory in Music ของกรุงปักกิ่ง และร้องบทประพันธ์ Yellow River Cantata ร่วมกับวาทยากรชื่อดัง Tsung Yeh ที่ Esplanade Concert Hall
